Buick 3.8 V6 Front Timing Cover

Buicks are notorious for oil leaks. This is compounded by using Mobil 1 synthetic oil which leaks easier than conventional oils. The Mobil 1 is worth it because of the superior wear characteristics and the resistance to breakdown under the tremendous heat a turbocharger generates. Three areas are prone to leaks. The rear main seal, the valve covers, and the front seal.

The Buick motor also has a problem with oil pressure. It is common to see a high mileage car with only 6-8 psi of oil pressure at idle when the engine temperature is around 200 degrees. This is not good.

The aftermarket has developed a new timing cover to address two of these problems. Two problems with just a cover? Yep. Buick motors are different from most Detroit motors since the oil pump and water pumps are built into the front cover. There is some extra effort needed to prime the oil pump before the first start though.

This is the front timing cover of the motor. It is an aftermarket cover with an improved front seal and a high volume oil pump. The stock front seal is a "rope" type seal which lasts about 30,000 miles. You had to pull the cover to replace the seal since it was pressed in from the back side. The aftermarket cover has a neopreme seal which you can replace from the front.

The reverse view has the cam sensor "installed" to show how it engages the oil pump shaft.

Here it is on the motor.

This is one of many methods for priming the oil pump. Some people pack the pump with Vaseline®. I have done this but now prefer to put a funnel on one of the output lines and run it backwards for about one half quart.
